The Connells were simply one of the most talented alternative rock bands that came out of the Southeast U.S. during that "golden era" that included Drivin' & Cryin', Love Tractor, REM, and the Indigo Girls. Although some have called them a REM copycat band, just one run thru of 'One Simple Word' should put that myth to rest. 'Get a Gun' and 'Stone Cold Yesterday' probably got the most play time when released, but the entire package is pretty awsome. The distinct sound of the Connells came thanks to their refreshingly clear style of play. Clear lyrics, clear guitar, and clear base all without getting folksy. No distortion or high echo-drive here. 'One Simple Word' reflected college/alternative music at its best...before it all went to Seattle in a bucket.
