History by the non-historian. A book that just tells the whole story - in outline form. He wrote the 1st edition after WW1. To explain how the peoples and nations of the world came to be who they are, he goes back to the beginning of time and outlines what is known - right up to after WW2. He's a master writer who tells the story of man's history very well. He starts with rocks, the evolution of life, prehistoric man, and then essentially outlines the history of people and their societies around the world. He tries hard to be an objective reporter and mostly succeeds. He is, though, a definite Englishman with an Anglo view of the world. I buy this and give to friends who are interested in what really went on. His histories of religion (the impact each has had on the world) are most informing for all major religions of today. His explanation of the Great Powers development of Europe and the problems and wars that resulted is more understandable than the last graduate history course I had. He revised this book every few years and updated with new information. He removed some material on fossiled human discoveries later found to be a hoax. After he died, a final edition or two was completed by an assistant. I have both the 1949 and 1971 editions.Read full review
