Thought it was an amusing and entertaining series when it was first on TV throughout the 70s/80s. Clever writing and the villian always knew that he (Columbo) knew that he (the villian)knew that he knew, if you can follow that logic. That was the basic premise. Columbo always seemed too dim witted (at first)to solve these crimes and the perpertrator always felt like he was one step ahead of Columbo. That was key in Columbo's strategy in getting his man (or woman). I did not dislike anything about this series, although, when it was resurrected with new episodes in the late 90's, I still preferred the originals. Now this is going to seem like a negative review here, but it is not. I suffer from insomnia and because I have seen so many of these episodes, I feel they relax me and I can doze off to much needed sleep. Of course, this is after I received this boxed set and had not seen the episodes for many years. So after watching them over and over again for the first month....I now just drift off. This is a positive for me, and I am guessing that anyone ordering these will just view them from time to time and not fall asleep. Trust me they are extremely entertaining, so if you were a Columbo fan back then, you will love these DVD's. Just for an FYI, before finding these I just watched old taped movies over and over again awaiting for the sandman. Another thing responsible for the success of this series were the guest stars in all the episodes. It was quite a feather in one's cap to be cast in these mysteries. Gene Barry, Janet Leigh, Robert Conrad, David Cassidy, Louis Jourdan, Robert Culp, William Windom, Johnny Cash, Anne Baxter, Eddie Albert, Suzanne Pleshette, Ray Milland, Leslie Nielsen, Roddy McDowall and Lee Grant are just a sampling of the who's who, of Hollywood greats (back then) who would guest star in each episode. My apologies because I know there were countless others who entertained us in these series, and I will probably remember them after this review is completed. In closing if you are a mystery fan, with a sense of humor, you will definately appreciate these DVD's. No it is not a heavy duty who-done-it drama, but more of a light, dry and amusing form of mystery entertainment. Happy watching!Read full review
I'm not a huge nostalgia fan, so i was skeptical about watching Columbo for the first time since seeing it in 1971 when i was very young. But what a treat! YES it is dated. YES it moves slowly. YES sometimes the dialogue is stilted. But still.....THIS is great stuff! The scripts are intelligent, the guest stars are wonderful, and Columbo.....? Well Peter Falk makes each of these shows feel and look like a "play".....he is so enmeshed in this character that you BELIEVE him as a detective and as a man. In many ways, this show is the antithesis of today's slam-bang, punchline-after-punchline, cliff-hanging shows. But much like "CSI:Las Vegas," this show broke new ground on television, and was copied over and over again by the network. It's good to see "the original." It's also interesting to see Peter Falk interract with actors like John Cassavetes, with whom he had a long and productive career as an co-actor, and as a director. With guests like John, Ray Milland, Ray Culp, Ida Lupino, Bradford Dillman, and the like there is no lack of guest star talent..... Buy this, and see some of the best television has ever offered us!Read full review
There truly is a little Columbo in all of us. Right? This is the best of the best, the first season, complete with a host of terrific actors and unforgettable plots. Who doesn't like a good mystery. Here it is in one fantastic package. Hours of great viewing, and if your old enough, even greater memories. Don't forget your raincoat and your brown bag lunch too........

This was one of the best seasons of this series and I especially love the pilot episode with Gene Barry ("Prescription for Murder"). Lt. Columbo always zeroes in on the killer and the way he was stern when needed was a welcome difference to the way he started kissing too much butt as the series went on (Seasons 6 and 7 especially, and anything after). He's dealing with MURDERERS -- no need to be so polite, Lieutenant!! I also loved the episode with Lee Grant ("Ransom for a Dead Man") and any episode with Robert Culp or Jack Cassidy is always 5-star. Loved it and I recommend it highly for anyone who appreciates this gone-but-not-forgotten TV show.
