Unfortunately, this is a book where I actually saw the movie before I read the book, breaking a personal vow. But fortunately, the book was superior which is saying a great deal since the movie is quite good entertainment. Flora, the main character, referred to most often as "Robert Poste's child", reminds me a great deal of Jane Austin's Emma, trying to build, rebuild or destroy relationships among the Starkadder clan in order to bring some sanity and decorum into their family. Her scheming in doing so is great writing, and I appreciated so much the qaulity of the vocabulary of Ms. Gibbons. The character development is superior, as it should be, to the movie, and the change brought about by the adept shepherding of Flora Poste, not only of the character of the people, but of the atmosphere and appearance of the farm itself is remarkable and uplifting. It was good to read a novel where the author is not ashamed to create book with a natural and happy conclusion. Thought the vocabulary is well created, the book is not wordy and relatively short, which fits so many of our reading satyles today. Overall I would recommend it for a good chuckle at the eccentric people we are as a part of God's creation. Oh, and how could I forget the cows! Even their names are hilarious. Enjoy.Read full review
Long after Jane Austen, but well before modern day chick-lit writers, this little gem of a book shines bright. It is witty, insightful, cutting--without the over-arching cynicism most modern authors succumb too. And who can resist a friend with a bra fetish, an old man who prefers to scrub dirty dishes because 'that's the way it's always been done on Cold Comfort Farm', along with that nasty thing the family matriarch saw in the woodshed? And then there's the delicious Reuben... Read the book before seeing the movie. Film just fails to encompass the ascerbic glee and gentle lampooning Stella Gibbons infuses into her delightful story.
