I have watched this movie three times. Jim Jarmusch is by far the most original American director working today. We seem to live in an era when most movies on offer have unrealistic plots, dialogue, and characters (and aren't worth watching, in my opinion). Jarmusch presents characters who are not especially likeable, are not accomplished in any way, but who are engaged in living lives one can see as realistic, if not particularly pleasant. Everything that occurs is unexpected. His actors are, with a few exceptions, masters of their trade.

This is not one of Jarmusch's best films, but there are some great character pieces within. Tom Waits and Iggy Pop are delightfully bizarre, as they discuss smoking as non-smokers, and Taylor Mead is gloriously Taylor Mead in his vignette as well. In fact, this disc is worth the money just for the Taylor Mead interview in the extras. Mead himself has said that this is his best interview ever, and it's engaging and warm and always interesting to listen to someone with Mead's avant-garde history and talents.
