David Stuart Chadwick And Michael Thomas Jeremy Clyde rose to prominence as Chad And Jeremy in 1964 with a series of superlative, folk rock inspired singles for the World Artists label, including "A Summer Song", "Yesterday's Gone", a lushly orchestrated reworking of Perry Como's "If I Loved You" and a sublime, gorgeous interpretation of Paul Whiteman's "Willow Weep For Me" (with a dream arrangement that employs minors and harmonics to greater advantage than most). But in early 1965, Chad And Jeremy signed with the Columbia label and hit their stride as first rate purveyors of not only folk rock, but balladry, garage rock and psychedelia. "Painted Dayglow Smile" collects the best of their 1965-1968 work for Columbia, from their May 1965 "Before And After" single (regarded by many as their consummate track) to the breezy 1966 ballad "Distant Shores" and a generous helping of tracks from their 1967-1968 experimental "Of Cabbages And Kings" and "The Ark" albums. Differing mission statements sent Chad And Jeremy on an extended hiatus after the release of "The Ark". And although their 1983 reunion album for Rocshire did produce a fluke hit single in "Zanzibar Sunset" and subsequently extended the demand for their live performances for another five years, Chad And Jeremy again underwent an extended sabbatical throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. Thankfully, in 2003, despite Chad's being based in Idaho and Jeremy remaining an active participant in British theatre, the venerable duo managed to reach a reasonable compromise on individual commitments and have for the past several years toured the United States regularly and have also released CDs of new material each of the past four years. Meanwhile, "Painted Dayglow Smile" serves an ideal commemoration of what to date has been their most productive period. However, if their most recent studio outings are any indication, their best work may yet lie ahead of them as they enter their golden years (both Chad And Jeremy turned 65 in 2006).
