This was one of my all-time favorite movies. Sure, it was science fiction, but it is real! Everybody expects this story to one day play out for real. After "Jaws", Steven Spielberg, hit another home-run with this film. The special effects, the lighting, and sound were all great, and the entire movie experience was terrific. Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) is a lineman for the power company, and all of a sudden the lights go out and everybody starts seeing UFO's, including Roy! The experience has indelibly printed some sort of message on his brain and he is powerless to resist it. In trying to tell people what he saw, everybody thinks that he is nuts. He loses his job, and his wife (Teri Garr) takes the kids and leaves him. Roy meets another person (Melinda Dillon) who has also seen these UFO's, and her son, Barry, who is only four, has been abducted by them. Together they are being drawn to a mysterious mountain where the government has built a landing strip hoping to attract the aliens. Once there, they see exactly what has been drawing them. The space ships land and hundreds of people from many years before are disembarked, including Barry. In turn, Roy is one of a select group invited to be taken aboard the ship for some sort of exploration. Thus, the close encounter continues. I found this film to be artistically beautiful, and thoroughly entertaining. If you have never seen it, you are missing one of the best works ever produced by the motion picture industry.Read full review
I saw this at the theater when I was five and loved it. It has amazing visuals and the story is excellent. If you ever wondered if there is intelligent live out there somewhere this is for U. A great film from 77!

Filmed 90% in Mobile,AL including real homes that are still lived in today, an actual train crossing sets the stage for the first on-screen "encounter" - Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a Benchmark for innovations that appear in Sci-Fi films of Today. It actually was the first movie to test CGI, but the results were deemed not on par with what they needed. So the final effects were ground breaking in that methods were used that bring real looking convincing scenes that make you say to yourself "I think that's really there" instead of "wow, they did a great job with that effect". They easily stand up to today's CGI polish!! Truly a classic that brings out the beauty of wonder, eye bathing effects, and the deep down inside of you longing to consider the possibilities of "what's out there"!Read full review

This is a classic film. I remember watching it at the theater 20 years ago. It is still enjoyable to watch 20 years later. Even though some elements in the film reflect the time period it was made, the story is gripping and has a nice ending. It just shows how much the present world has advanced in the computers and technology since this movie came out.
