The Cleveland CG-14 wedge is a slightly oversized clubface of Roger Cleveland's classic fifth design in 1988, which he appropriately named the 588. In fact, the 588 is so well balanced and functional that the later Cleveland 797, CG-10, CG-11, and CG-12 wedges are all just 588's with tweaks. The newest 2015 Cleveland wedges are even called 588 with Rotex (and Rotex 2.0) face/groove milling. The CG-14 was the apex of design, before the USGA got involved dumbing down the grooves and spin characteristics. It was hard metal with deep U grooves. Later versions, the lousy CG15 and the barely acceptable CG16 used lesser metal, and they wear out quickly. Cleveland and the pro shops WANT you to replace your wedges after 300 strikes, which can be after a few weeks if you both practice and play. The CG-14 is the old, hard steel that will last several years. The slight oversize is helped in its softer feel by the elasti-plastic vibration dampener in the minor cavity back. The only other Cleveland wedge to perform near as well over long periods of time is the CG-11, which used the Carbon Matrix Material (CMM) to soften the feel of the clubface, plus has a small cavity back. But it is slightly smaller in its grooves, and CMM tarnishes. The 797 (seventh design in 1997) is beryllium nickel, which has similar soft feel without a cavity back, and the BeNi grooves last a long time. There are hundreds of wedges out there, and besides the Cleveland 797 and CG-11 models, many of the Ping wedges (Tour Gorge is excellent) are very good substitutes. The TaylorMade RBZ also has a cavity back system with a sole configuration that mimics the CG-14. You cannot go wrong with a properly fitted CG-14 or a Ping Tour Gorge wedge. Mine are 2-deg flat lie with a midsize grip in a softer flex shaft specifically selected for chipping and pitching. Few full shots are played with high-lofted wedges, so shaft matching them to the rest of your set is not that important. The FEEL and feedback of a soft pitch is important.Read full review
The Cleveland CG14 with Zip Grooves is my favorite wedge of all time. It's forgiving with nicely designed perimeter weighting, it has great playability and appearance without being chunky or too large, it has great feel with the small insert and a unique look & shape of a wedge only Cleveland can make. The sole design is not too large and the Dot system of bounce offerings located on the hosel is simple and effective. I've owned many great wedges, including some newer offerings from Cleveland, Titleist, Ping & Mizuno but the Cleveland GC14 remains my favorite wedge and best wedge Cleveland has ever made in my opinion because it strikes the best balance of playability, forgiveness, appearance and feel. The CG14 is also one of the first wedges to come out in the gun metal dark finish which has since been copied by many/most other manufacturers. Titleist wedges are also very good but to me Cleveland continues to set the benchmark in innovation and design by which all other wedges are judged.Read full review
Any one that plays serious golf knows cleveland golf makes great wedges, this particular wedge is no different. Originally, I bought the Cg 14 to compare with some other wedges I had at the time. Well, when I look in my bag the Cg 14 is still there. It's very versatile and I especially love the way it performs in the sand. This wedge knows how to get up and down for pars, provided you don't miss the short putts that it gives you. I would like to give a con on this club, but after using it for a while, I really don't have one. Any con I have would be human error and not the club.
These wedges are simply excellent. When I bought the 52, I was astounded at the practice range. Very consistent targeting, distance and forgiving of my irregular swing. But the best thing, and this is really cool, is the ability I now have to put spin on the ball. I can actually make it stop very close to where it lands, and I can even make it draw back several feet with backspin. These clubs are wonderful. I have the 52, 56, and the 60. They all have their uses, and they all work very well. I recommend these for any golfer who likes to work the ball with action after it leaves the club. Best wedges I've ever owned. Nothing else compares.
I had heard nothing but great things about these wedges. My TaylorMade TP 60* needed to be replaced. I thought I'd give this one a try. I've been somewhat disappointed in its performance. It has great trajectory and solid feel to it- maybe I just have to play with it a little longer and figure it out a little better. The length is about 15 yards shorter than the TM (I hit my TM 60* 90-95 yards full swing), the accuracy is comparable, and the spin is also somewhat similar. I'm sure that I'll figure it out soon. If not, it appears as though I'll have no problem getting rid of it on E-BAY with all of these Cleveland lovers around.
