Citizen Soldiers by Steven Ambrose is a wonderful book, chock full of first hand experiences of American Infantry GIs as they fought from the Normandy coast in 1944 to VE day in 1945. Told by front line soldiers, it is from the perspective of war at its lowest, ugly form. No big maps of strategy and tactics, just infantry soldiers fighting for their lives, to finish the job and go home. This book is a tribute to the American Citizen Soldier, who, through their natural abilities and sheer numbers defeated the German Army in western Europe. Another great read of the Greatest Generation.
I like the Book, because of the Easy Going written Style of the Author.Stephen E. Ambrose was known to Copy Sentences out of Other Authors Historical Books. This i found out after His Death.I was dispointed about that Fact, because His Interveiws were Suberb Material, and Still are to this day. First Eyewitness Accounts set a Book apart from Other like Authors.Authors like Andy Rooney,Kurt Vonnegut. and Joe Heller.Thats Why i bough the Book as a Replacement to My Originial missing the Covers.William
Great for students of history.

citizen soldiers is ambrose at his best by letting the people who lived history write it using memoirs interviews, letters etc . in this book it was the "unprofessional soldier" that was his focus. rousing exploits of draftees and enlistees, ordinary citizens who performed extrodinarily from d-day to v.e. day. if you like real history dont pass this book up
Ambrose is a WWII historian who interviewed thousands of WWII veterans. His writing skills are top notch. He as written several books on the war, most of which should be required reading in schools all across this great nation of ours.
