This inexpensive managed switch is a gem; it does more or less the same things as its more expensive brethren in the illustrious cisco family, but it is fanless. All I had to do was upgrade the firmware (free from cisco) and configure it with VLANS, a few ALCs and a management address. The buyer should be aware that the 48 ports are fast ethernet and not gigabit ethernet. This was no problem for my needs since my cabling is ancient. It has two gigabit ports that can be used for interconnections. the buyer should be aware that the small-business line has a quite user-friendly GUI, so you don't need to be a CLI expert to set things up. You should know your networking, however. This is not for the amateur.
