Connect securely to a remote corporate network from the comfort of your own home with the Cisco 871W 54 Mbps Wireless G router. This unit seamlessly connects your home or small office to a company's office with always-on data, voice, and video services at broadband network speeds. Users are free to use the device as just a wireless router. The 871W is just a part of the 870 Series of routers from Cisco. Like other routers in this series, it offers a number of routing protocols including Layer 2 tunneling protocol, access control lists, and generic routing encapsulation. Hardware accelerated 3DES is a standard encryption feature as is hardware accelerated AES. Despite its myriad of complex features, this router makes use of the Cisco SDM software for setup and deployment, meaning the time to get up and running is minimal. The device has four switch ports and a 10/100 Ethernet WAN port as well as a console port and two detachable antennae. The default DRAM of 128MB is expandable to 256MB. The Wi-Fi b/g connection is fully backward compatible with older protocols. Running proprietary Cisco iOS software, this router provides near limitless customization to fit any existing internetwork architecture's needs or to begin creating a whole new one. Configure the router to allow remote SSH (SecureSHell) connections for easy on the fly changes protected by a username and password. Establish internetwork topology with a variety of routing and discovery protocols, including EIGRP, BGP, and more. Establish QoS (Quality of Service) settings on each interface to ensure maximum bandwidth where it is needed the most. Mitigate DDoS (Directed Denial of Service) attacks by filtering unwanted or erroneous packets inbound on the router's outgoing interfaces. Tailor this Cisco router to fit your networking specific application requirements through the powerful CLI (Command-Line Interface) provided by Cisco.Cisco's 870 series of WiFi routers feature all the industry standard security protocols, including SIF (Stateful Inspection Firewalls), IPSec (IP Security), 3DES (Triple Date Encryption Standard), AES (Advanced Encryption Standard), and IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) to safeguard your network and its data. Fully configure your network's security using ACL (Access-Control Lists) filters on each individual interface to ensure only the correct information is going to the right sources. The outgoing Wi-Fi connection can be further secured using Wi-Fi MAC (Media Access Control) address filtering, RADIUS authentication, and assigning a limited number of connected WiFi hosts. Full support for all industry standard Wi-Fi authentication protocols is present, including WEP, WPA, and WPA2.Using the device's Wi-Fi G connection, hosts can utilize up to 54Mbps data transfer rates over the router's Wi-Fi service. Use the router as a WAP (Wireless Access Point), as a Layer 2 switch, or as a router to create or supplement an existing internetwork ecosystem. With full support for up to four VLANs, one for each interface, or up to 10 wireless VLANs, this Cisco router can help to maintain consistent data transfer rates even on a busy connection. Standard VPN support is also present, with Pass-Thru protocols, including PPTP and L2TP.

Feature-rich. Low cost. Excellent addition for cert study.
This is an excellent router, especially for those who are doing some cert study. Place this on the edge of your network as an Internet gateway and carve out a couple subnets for production and lab use. Speedtests show the router makes full use of the broadband connection, however, turning on the firewall features slows you down a bit. Just ordered a $7 stick of memory for it - should kick up the speeds back up a bit. In any case, for the cost, which is minimal, this router is PACKED with features - especially if you get ahold of one of the higher-level IOSs.
