An excellent retelling of a timeless classic, George C. Scott gives Ebeneezer Scrooge the character flaws and reformations that make A CHRISTMAS CAROL a great story brought to screen. Thanks for making this DVD available, I am glad to have it in my library.

This is absolutely the version of Dicken's classic that we deem the best. Yes, I have seen many, from the Sims, to the Stewart(which is also good) and the ridiculous, like Bill Murray's Scrooged. George C. Scott was a great actor, but it was his believabilty and vulnerability that makes this performance stand out. He goes from an awful person to generous saint in the matter of a few hours, and getting people to LIKE you again is not for the faint of heart. It's the struggle you watch in his eyes, his face that shows he is not accepting this easily - he isn't just being "scared" into repenting. The ghosts find his heart that was buried in disappointment, the heart that beat with care and love. They remind him of who is really is/was. This version shows that ephipany very well, and the supporting actors are no whimps either. The setting, the characters and the realistic view of a not so romantic Victorian era, is gritty and off-putting at times. It is a GREAT story, and my opinion is that this is the best telling of it!Read full review
This is one of my favorite productions of A Christmas Carol. George C. Scott is magnificent in the role of Scrooge. The emotions felt throughout this movie run from sad to very droll and humorous to frightening. Well cast, with the exception of one scene when Susannah York as Mrs. Cratchit mourns the loss of her son, Tiny Tim. Ms. York seems as though she is reading her lines from cue cards without any real emotion. This one scene does not detract from the overall performances, however. A timely, seasonal story. I'm happy to finally have it in my collection.
My favorite of all of the "Scrooge" movie versions. It's hard to top George C. Scott as an actor and he is excellent in this role.
