I bought this book after reading Adichie's other book (Half of a Yellow Sun) so I was really expecting a lot from the book. Though in and of itself the book is not a bad read, I think that having read her other book first set the bar really high. This book is about one family and the ties that bind them. I got bored with the story about half way through and I felt that the author burrowed a couple of rabbit holes that she didn't quite finish exploring by the end of the book, so that was kind of disappointing. Compared to Half of a A Yellow Sun, even though national war is horrific and virtually inescapable, I thought this book and this story wasn't as riveting, interesting and gripping as that one. If you haven't read either then read this one first so that you won't experience the let down I did by reading the other one first.Read full review
I purchased this book after reading "Half of a Yellow Sun" by Adichie. I couldn't put down "Half of a Yellow Sun" and the same was true for "Purple Hibiscus." Both books are page turners and a great way for first and second generation Nigerians (particularly Igbos) living outside of Nigeria to learn what life was like for our parents as well as our cousins and relatives still in Nigeria. "Half of a Yellow Sun" is also great for anyone who wants to learn a bit about the Biafra War. My parents don't talk about that time at all, so this was a great way to get a sense of what it was like without forcing your parents to relive those painful memories. Adichie is a skilled and gifted writer. I only wish she had more books for me read!

This is an outstanding first novel. As someone who grew up in Africa, I could relate to her vivid descriptions. Her treatment of family dynamics from the perspective of a young girl were outstanding. Great Book Group Book.
