Sister Wendy’s ‘A Child’s Book of Prayer in Art’ is a wonderful introduction to Art interpretation especially designed for children. This book includes beautiful full page reproductions of masterpiece artworks, accompanied by commentary and interpretation of each painting by Sister Wendy, a prayer that she has written to go along with each picture and two enlarged details from the artwork. The book is organized into spiritual themes that accompany each painting, each carefully discussed in simple words, yet very thoughtful concepts for children. The spiritual themes are broad and universal, and not specifically limited to one religion. The spiritual concepts included are; love, respect, family, understanding, learning, forgiveness, choosing heaven, true happiness, thinking, determination, selflessness, and listening. For example, the detail on the cover of the book of the child gazing upward, is from the painting ‘Portrait of an Old Man and a Young Child’, by Domenico Ghirlandaio, and illustrates the theme of love. The old man’s nose is covered with warts and blisters, and yet the child looks up at him with love and trust and is not afraid. Sister Wendy describes how the old man and the child need each other, and how they hold each other with their arms as an expression of love, in simple words that a child can understand. A very thoughtful introduction to Art interpretation and spiritual values for children. Reading level is ages 4-8 (32 pages)Read full review
This book contains fifteen classical paintings in color which complement various themes along with simply written prayers for children by Sister Wendy. These include the subjects of: Respect, Love, Family, Understanding, Learning, Forgiveness, Choosing Heaven, True Happiness, Thinking, Determination, Selflessness and Listening. Her explanation of the theme is highly applicable to children. She skillfully complements the subject of the paintings with simple but brief explanations of how the artist developed ideas and used various techniques. Sister Wendy is a Catholic nun and art critic who wrote television specials and several other books for adults about understanding art. This is a great book for an adult to introduce classic art to children as well as to have the child study the pictures and develop their own ideas of what is being portrayed. The priest in our parish is integrating art into his sermons, so this book is a way for children to also be included in that process. The books contains oversized reproductions of the classic art reproduced in accurate colors.Read full review
the art is amazing -- the text is practical and lovely! I had a new copy years ago and gave it to someone and regretted it. This is a welcome re-addition to our family keepers.
