I bought this book to build some small to mid sized chicken coops for my farm. I have found many in this book that I would like to build, however it should be stated that one must know some basic carpentery skills and have a few basic tools to build with. Most people can understand that. The book has 45 building plans, The ideas are great and the color photos are a big help. The problem is that the plans are vague and you must figure many measurements on your own. There are also no material lists, so you must figure out how many hinges, brackets and how much wood is needed for each project. What really annoys me the most about this book, is that if you want the exact building plans, you must contact another source and pay for them!?! I thought the exact plans would be IN the book, boy, was I mistaken.I feel it is missing the most important part,This book the way it is, really isn't for a beginner, you need to use your imagination alot to build these projects. Hope you know a carpenter who can figure these plans out for you.Read full review

I've studied chicken coops for years, designed and constructed many of various sizes in the northeastern United States. I find this book to be a very useful resource for coming up with new ideas/designs. Each design is introduced by capacity i.e. Shiloh Mini Hen Retreat HOLDS: 50 hens, 10 nest boxes & 5 roosts. So, aside from a pleasing design, the capacities are at the fore so you are building to suit your present and future needs. Each design starts with a full view illustration of how the completed coop should appear. Then elevation views and overhead views are provided with all the necessary dimensions, right down to the size of the hen doors. I woul not call this a beginner's construction manual, as it is obviously assumed that the builder has some prior experience with basic construction. Designs range from very small, to housing for hundreds of birds. From closed in runs, to free range tractor/mobile units which are growing in demand. The builder is presented with ideas which make use of items he/she may already have lying around, or fancier new construction units. Among the most basic would be a farm broiler pen and the most whimsical would most definitely be the Cezanne's Garden coop... where not a single angle seems to be repeated! Something I'd never seen before is the cord wood coop, which the owner used to defy sub-zero temperatures up in Minnesota with great success. All in all, if you're wanting to build a coop but just don't have any interesting ideas, this is the book. If you have some prior building experience, these designs are a breeze. If you don't have experience, some of these designs come in kit form. I think it has something for everyone and for every climate. If you want something far better than a pamphlet, this book's for you! 166 pages, over 8" wide by 10" tall, thus the title "Big Book" of chicken Coops.Read full review
Martha Stewart would crap her pants if she read this book!!!! It sucks! I wanted a book that provided chicken coop house plans... This book I kid you not, has a chicken coop plan that tells you how to build a chicken coop out of square hay bails and a tarp to cover it, and one out of a pickup truck cab!!!! REALLY?!?!?!?! I wasnt going for white trash chicken houses or for something embarrassing to put into my back yard...I wanted a "how to build" a chicken coop not a "how to make your farm look po-dunk!!!!" I'm sorry Judy Pangman go back to the drawing board and rethink your book. To be honest the title of your book should be called "You Might be white trash if you make your chicken coop out of this!"..I just wasted my money on your retarded hairbrained ideas! I have a feeling you smash beer cans on your forehead, bite your toe nails, and pick your nose in public!!! Can I have a refund?Read full review
Most of the coops are just recycled junk thrown together. If you are into that sort of thing, then it is a decent book. I was looking more for actual chicken coop plans with schematics, dimensions, material lists, etc..
