Amazing 1st album the groups which circulation has been completely sold within several days, has held on in the American charts six weeks. Programs-fatal the combination of a rhythm-and-blues to a jazz was pleasant to much, and Chicago steels of one of the first commands which, so to say, have accustomed us to a jazz-rock. Besides, I remember groups in which the bass guitar would play such appreciable role a little. And the guitar of Kath is super! Not without reason these children warmed up Europeans before Hendrix's performances in 1968, and even the great guitarist has told that Terry has simply amazed it and that it (Terry) is better than it (Jimi ). After the given disk the group has reduced the name to one word, has let out two more double albums in similar style, and then and live in Carnegie-hall on whole four (!) Plates, it was not bad noted throughout 70, however has gone-has gone further. It is a pity all the same that talents eventually start to follow the tastes of crowd, aspiring to make the creativity by more intelligible and is very frequent less interesting. Anyone who is more familiar with Chicago's later ballad-based output should put aside any fears they have of listening to this album, which focuses more on straightforward horn based rock with elements of jazz. There's a surprising diversity of material, from straight piano based lounge music ("Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is"), hard rock ("Listen"), Beatles-esque pop ("Questions 67 and 68") and blues ("South California Purples"). The band are all competent at their instruments and vocals, but the highlight of the album is undoubtedly Terry Kath's guitar, varying from understated rhythm acoustic on "Beginnings" to the blistering five minute workout that opens "Poem 58", showing a flair and creative edge that is sorely lacking from their later work. Being a double album, there are elements of padding in places, such as the self described "Free Form Guitar", which while an interesting artistic exercise, doesn't really need to go on for nearly seven minutes, and the blues jam "Liberation" that closes the album, which meanders along the same theme for ten minutes before a brief excursion into more free form experiments. I get the distinct impression that, had they existed, the band could have gone for an excellent 50 minute CD, cutting out most of the filler. Chicago would go on to make bigger selling and better known records, but they never quite recaptured the vitality and energy of this debut.Read full review
it is a interesting idea of rock/jazz music together in my opinion.best tracks 2/3/5/6 & 9.track 7 a lot of guitar rubbish! if you are a collecter buy it as its there first album.this is my opinion.still play from time to time so is not that bad.
