Charles Mingus, a musician people either love or hate. I personally am a lover of his work. The dissonance a strange musical ideas leave me in suspense and give a sense of danger to his compositions. Plus Max Roach is a must have for any jazz collecter. Max roach, one of the greatest drummers of the bebop era makes an appearence on two of the songs, making a huge impression, playing a solo that makes the kit come alive using syncopations and unique tones. This album is not for every body Mingus is a daring arranger who love dissonance a suprises. On the track "Lady Bird" Mingus' Band takes you along on a musical roller coater of dynamic burst and decays, and the horns were perposly arranged to play slightly out of tune like a junior high marching band. Mingus is a very unique musicians and for the sake of checking out as much of his work as possible this album is a great find, and for the low price of ebay I could not pass this one up. One if the great things about the cd revolution was the re-introduction of great music of the past, which had slipped out of view for various reasons. Here's a perfect example: two great figures in mid-20th-century jazz are here returned in a wonderful recording from their past that highlights once again the power and beauty of modern jazz.
