When Bette Davis was 29yo. & Henry Fonda was 32yo, they made this scripted remake of Edmund Goulding's silent film, "The Trespasser." The talking film version starts with beautiful Bette Davis (Mary Donnell, aka ex-wife of gangster, Al Haines) working quite hard as a legal secretary for a married lawyer Lloyd Rogers (Ian Hunter). Mary is seemingly selfless in loyalty to her employer. Trying to reform her life from being associated with a gangster, she goes to night school, as well. After falling madly in love with the son, Jack V. Merrick, Jr. (Henry Fonda) of a wealthy & control-freak of a father, Jack V. Merrick, Sr. (Donald Crisp), the lovers attempt to elope. But, Merrick, Sr. hunts them down, forces their annulment & accuses Mary of being a gold-digger because she's the ex-wife of a gangster. The lovers' story twists quite a bit, especially after Mary becomes an unwed mother within the time frame of her annulled marriage. Instead of seeking child support, Mary secretly has the child & works for all they have. Another twist turns the tide of Mary's life when Rogers, her employer, dies suddenly & leaves his estate to his devoted employee, Mary. That's not the end, either. Tune in yourself to find out what becomes of Mary~Read full review
