This book is pretty much outside my ken as I only paint faces and figures in acrylics and oils, but I really like this and anyone could pick up some ideas for their paintings regardless of the medium. She is a watercolorist and mixed media painter too. Collage and layering, etc. I have several dozen of these books and this is as good as any of them and better than most. Nita Leland is great and have three of her books, but she is kind of betwixt and between as far as abstact and realistic art is concerned. I would love to do watercolors and now that they make watercolor canvas think I could paint portraits or figures on linen canvas which is all that I use. Absorbent Ground is what I use and it will make any surface receptive to watercolors that imitate watercolor on paper. Ms. Beam uses paintings by other artists besides her own to illustrate the techniques she writes about in depth and shows exactly how they are created. Acrylics, inks, even an oil painting and lots of mixed media paintings are illustrated. Most are watercolors or mixed media using watercolor and whatever. I love her and other artist's assemblages and collages, etc. It's not just a good book for learning new techniques, but it is a very fun book to boot.Read full review
I really like the way the book takes me through a variety of activities, materials and themes to explore. By working my way through them I have discovered new, inventive ways of expressing ideas and emotions. It has been, and continues to be, a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Even reworking chapters can result in a totally different outcome. I bought this book for the adventure. I am an artist and craftsman. I love going to workshops to try new things. This book is a multitude of workshops that I can work into my dizzying schedule at my convenience. Oh, what fun!!
Perfect!! 5 stars.
