Powerful, 80 watts might not sound like much but comparing this to several other brands claiming 100 or 120 it puts them to shame. Sony, Yahmaha, onkyo and the like cant compare. I understand that this has power steering and pushing two channels this might be in the 120 range. But i have this running four fronts and i dont notice any strain or any difference in volume when running four speakers vs 2. Highs are not fatiguing at loud volume and lows are solid and responsive. This wont have the slam that some of the other 2 channel Carver models have. Example TFM 35x or TFM 55x A760x 705x. All i have directly compared. But when you consider the cost and the fact that this is 5 channel vs two. This is really a good value per $$$. Never compared this to a really high end amp like krell etc but you cant pick up a krell for 200 bucks either. So really not a fair comparison. I have tried several preamps with it but nothing compares to the ct 27 - 28 or 29 v. I have tried sunfire, onkyo, Marantz and others with it, i dont know if the carver matches the amp some how or if the others just dont stack up but you cant judge the amp or other carver amps fairly unless its paired with one of the preamps i mentioned above. I have tried other amps with the ct series preamp and i always go back to carver for both. I know there are a lot of carver haters out there but i simply cant find any brand that sounds better in this price range. I have owned a ton of gear and my main two channel setup is still old Carver gear. My advice is forget this is just 80 watts and can be purcahsed for 200 bucks and sit back and prepare to be impressed. I even have one for the garage....Read full review

I own the AV 705x, the big brother of this amp, let me tell you there is no comparing a separate amp, with a receiver. specs on a receiver are based on one channel, not 5. the job of the separate amp is purely to reproduce sound and power your speakers. So when they say 80w a channel for 5 channels they mean it. and Carvers are rated conservatively, pair this with a decent used preamp and you will have a system that will out perform any receiver in the 2-3 thousand dollar price range. its a great deal don't let it pass you by.
