I decided to buy this book for my kids, who had two other Carl books by Alexandra Day. The kids love the pictures, and I love that I can change up the story whenever we "read" it. Since there are basically no words, it means you have to use your imagination based on the fabulous illustrations! For us, the book is especially special because our beloved Rottweiler Nipper recently passed away - it helps the kids feel more connected to her. Overall, excellent book with great illustrations! After we bought this, I went and bought 3 more of Alexandra Day's "Carl" books!
What a GREAT book! Especially for pre-readers or those who have trouble reading. This book is about a young child and his dog who go off on an adventure. The really wonderful thing about this author is that they rely on pictures and very few words to convey the story. What a great opportunity to let your child "read" or be in charge of developing the story-according to their own desires. It is really a cute book-I think you will be delighted.
This is a great book for its beautiful illustrations. I also like the fact that you can create the story as you go since there are no words other than the first and last pages of the book. Carl, the dog, is left in charge of the baby while the parents go out. The dog takes the baby on an adventure but has the child back to the crib before the parents return. I bought this for my son who is expecting his first child the end of January. He also happens to have a rottweiller which really personalizes the story for him and his daughter "to be."
As a rottweiler owner and lover of the breed, I was originally given a copy of this book for Christmas as part of a gift basket. While it is primarily art (you can follow the story in pictures if sharing the book with a child), the drawings are simply beautiful. I bought my latest copy to include in a gift basket for a dog in rescue and its "foster parent". I would highly recommend this book to anyone with children who love to make up their own stories, Rottweiler lovers, and anyone with a dog AND a baby. You shouldn't be disappointed.
I discovered our first 'Carl' book by Alexandra Day in a Barnes and Noble store a few years ago. Day is an amazing artist. I especially liked the book because it had no words. My daughter had to use her imagination and make up the dialog and the story. Carl's Christmas is now one of her favorite books. I look forward to buying all of this series very soon.
