This is a cheap, lightweight, portable scanner. This scanner scans at a slower speed than other scanners. Also it only scans a maximum of 8.5x11. Get a difference scanner if you want to scan legal size papers. However, this scanner cuts off less than other scanners on the edges. Other scanners have higher quality images, but if you just need a general scanner for small pages this one is a good deal. It conveniently has a USB connection for data and power.
This is a quite old model of the Cannon LIDE scanner. The N650U is a flat-bed scanner that measures 10.1 inches wide by 14.7 inched deep by 1.3 inches high. That's right, just over one inch tall. In addition to being small, the N650U requires only one cord (the USB cord also supplies the power, so there is no need for a separate power cord). The fact is that this scanner is so small and lightweight (3 pounds) that makes it very portable. The scanner scans slow but it is not horribly slow. Looking at the actual scanning speeds I have clocked when scanning a 4 inch by 6 inch photo at different resolutions, you see even the highest resolution scan takes me less than 1.5 minutes. These tests were run on the same computer within minutes of each other. 200dpi - 22 seconds 400dpi - 45 seconds 600dpi - 45 seconds 1200dpi - 80 seconds For scanning photos and text, the quality of the scanner is more than acceptable. Unfortunately the scanner does not scans 3-D objects with acceptable quality. I've tried to scan coins and the scan images did not show me all I can see with my eyes. I will not recommend this scanner to anyone who will need to scan 3-D objects. For example, if you are selling your pocket knives or jewelry on eBay, you could not scan them with this scanner. The scanner works quite silently. So, if you scan photos and documents only and you have not too many documents to scan this scanner is for you. The scanner driver was easily installed to my desktop PC which is running under Windows XP. But I did not find the scanner driver for Windows Vista. I told in the very beginning that this is very old scanner. Probably it is no longer supported by Microsoft...Read full review
This is a good scanner, but only for windows XP or older windows. The only way to get this scanner to work in Windows Vista or windows 7 that I know of is to download the Xp emulator that Microsoft did offer as a free download. Now, that emulator will slow down you computer a great deal, but only when you put it in emulator mode.(and I should add you need to have the software from the manufacturer. As with all things Microsoft, you must have the driver CD.) Now, I use Linux, specifically Linus Mint and this scanner works straight out of the box if you have loaded Sane and XSANE from the repositories. Plug it up and watch it work flawlessly. Enough from the tech guy.
Won't work on windows after ME edition - might as well buy a brick

I have two of these on two different computers. It's small, light, runs power through the USB cable (no wall wort). The Canon Scangear software is user friendly. I use Scangear with Irfanview, which is free. If you need a scanner that has a small footprint, this is it. If you hate wall worts, this is the scanner you want.
