There is one small gotcha for the Canon CanoScan 8400F Flatbed Scanner: its twain communication will not work if the path environmental variable is too long. If you test the unit from the control panel, it will pass the test but if you try to call up Canoscan software from say Photoshop or Paperport, you will get error messages like "twain source not found" or "cannot communicate with scanner". You can uninstall and reinstall the drivers to no effect. To fix this problem requires that you shorten the overall length of the environment variable by editing the user path environment variable, the system environment variable, or both so that the driver starts working. I don't know the exact magic numbers for maximum path length but I reduced my path from 1169 characters to 800 to get my scanner working again. I had this happen years ago on Vista 32 and just yesterday on Windows 7 x64. Canon obviously has no interest in fixing this. In the end, this is a small problem and easily fixed, at least, once you know what is going on. It's hard to believe that Canon's 64 bit Windows 7 drivers has this problem but it does. Lots of 8400F's for sale on eBay. It's a darn good scanner and the prices look dirt cheap. I just wonder how many are on sale because of the little gotcha I just describe. The thing looks silly, but that's beside the point as long as it works, right? This one may or may not work for you, depending on what you want it for, and how much you want to fiddle with it. The driver is not compatible with Windows 7, but Microsoft has a fix that you can download. Even after the downloaded driver was installed, the computer didn't recognise the device. I discovered that it can be opened through the Canon Toolbox program that came on the original driver disc. After scanning, it defaults to an editing program that doesn't work on Windows 7. I wasn't able to change the default, but some of you might know how to do that. I've just been closing all the annoying little error messages as they pop up. That said, it works great for scanning 35mm film, and I got some nice pics. Unfortunately, I have a lot of 110 negatives, and I had to trick the thing into scanning them. After some Photoshopping, I was able to get pictures from them, but the quality leaves a lot to be desired. It is also supposed to be able to scan slides, and 70 negs, as well as regular documents, but I haven't tried any of those. It takes time to mess with it, but it is a lot cheaper than paying a photo lab five bucks a shot. I got a good deal on the scanner, so it paid for itself after just a few pics.Read full review
A great scanner I bought this for two reasons one I like Canon I use two Canon Digital cameras and have found the color and quality very good. This was a very easy scanner to set up and use I scanned about 300 old photos and the scanner did a nice job of lighting and correcting some problems photos from the late 70's that had gone yellow and mean very yellow came out great. I have been very pleased I scanned all the photos I needed and made disks for family members of old pics from the 40's - 60's of our nans and grandads. All in all a great scanner at a very good price. Bob
I like the scanner for a couple of reasons. I've been scanning negatives and slide for quite a while and never been totally happy with the negative carriers supplied with the other brands. I really like the carriers that came with this one. It even has one to use with longer film strips so you can feed them through instead of cutting them into 5 or 6 frames at a time. Resulting photo files have been as good or better than other scanners I have used.
I love this scanner. It's speedy, the colors are great. 6400 x 3200 dpi and 48 bit depth. Works with both PC's and Mac. Scans, copies, does E-mail and PDF's. It scans documents, film, and slides. AND I have read other reviews and they all complain about using the CD that comes with it. I have Windows Vista and I just put the CD in and it did it's thing and was up and running. I've already been using it as I have a zillion documents to scan and put on DVD's. The other paper products go into the safe. I would buy another.
