Reviled for its all-too-realistic style and incredibly gory scenes. Cannibal Holocaust is among the most controversial films ever made. There are so many things about this movie that make it superior to the standard gorey fare that most audiences are accustomed to ( ie. the SAW movies, Friday The 13th series etc.)Not only is the acting better than most in that genre, but the movie is actually trying to make a statement about the ethics of censorship, sensationalism, western values and also raise questions about the realities of barbarism and cruelty in our own society. If you aren't more disgusted by the acts of the film crew that meets their demise than by the behavior of the cannibal tribe then I would venture to say that you need to re evaluate your ideas about what constitutes cruelty and exploitation. In all the hoopla, much of the artistic merit of this film has been overlooked. Its far from being a simple gore-fest and well worth watching IMO. ONE point of concern, there are some graphic depictions of the killing of animals in this movie as well, which I found more disturbing than the scenes where the human beings are killed - which we all know are 100% fake. I have to wonder whether the laws of film making, (which vary greatly around the world, especially at he time this film was made) allowed the producers to take certain liberties with live animals ? I hope that I am wrong, but the scenes with the turtle, pig and muskrat are pretty realistic. If its just good effects, hats off to the special effects crew, if not - shame on them for allowing what they did to happen.Read full review
Unless you're a movie collector of sorts looking to add this to your repetoire, you're probably like my friends and I who got this to see if it lived up to all the hype about its graphic, violent content. Regarding its brutal violence and animal cruelty, it did not disappoint, however it was not as shocking as it might have been simply because the technology was not available back then to make it so. Although no fault of its own, it does not exceed some of the horror films made today. In the early 1980s, upon its release, it would have blown audiences' minds and easily be one of the most controversial films of all time. So although Cannibal Holocaust will not haunt you for months on end, it is worth seeing simply to pay homage to one of the first films that dared to push the boundaries. It makes a pretty good guys' movie night too :)Read full review
I bought it because my wife, daughter, and daughter-in-law like to watch scarry movies. I read the review on this one and figured it would be worthwhile for them. After receiving it in the mail, my wife and daughter-in-law watched it, but my daughter wasn't there at the time. After watching it, my wife said it was horrifying, and she would tell my daughter NOT to watch it. Meanwhile, my duaghter-in-law started acting differently around the house, too. They both said it was a real movie about events that really happened, just the the review said. When I finally had time to watch it a couple of weeks later, I opened the DVD package but found only the second DVD in it. I said, "Oh, well," and watched it. The second DVD explains the first DVD and clearly states how it was filmed in two different types of film to give credibility for the first half being filmed separately from the second. The second DVD also states there was harm committed to the animals, i.e., some were killed in the filming (turtle, pig), but it was all a fake! I couldn't wait to tell my wife it was an act because she had started acting strangely around me. When I finally watched it, I thought part of the film was exagerrated and derogatory about (testerone levels in) men, and I told her so. I rate it as Excellent, though I would not watch it around my daughter-in-law due to the explicit nudity and sexual activities.Read full review
I really loved my DVD purchase. It was exactly how it was described in the description and item specifics. It came with a slip cover and a small booklet that contains a foldable poster, chapter selections, and a brief details about the film. I loved how the two disc set comes loaded with never before seen features. I really loved how the discs looked like the missing film cans like in the movie. The picture quality was stunning and beautiful. This is the best you're gonna get and this is the real deal people. The Unrated most controversial movie ever made, "Cannibal Holocaust". Enjoy!!!
