This book had a way of changing our thought process about race issues. I've made sure that everyone in our immediate family read this book. It does have a bit of a slow start but it was so worth getting through the initial character development phase.

I truly enjoyed this book because it takes you on a journey through the history of this family along its maternal lines. You get to experience what life was like for each of these women in their own hey-day and watch them pass the torch on to each succeeding generation. What I also found fascinating was reading about how inter-marriage (and other events) blended their blood lines and the different impacts this had on various family members. I actually didn't buy this book, I borrowed it from a friend who recommended it highly, but after reading it I wouldn't have minded spending money on it.
I read this book years ago and purchased this copy as a gift. Tademy walks the line between fiction and non-fiction with this take on her ancestry. I absolutely love it! It's a painfully beautiful account of her family's journey through slavery. Highly recommended!! I also suggest the sequel, "Red River." Also painful at times but so very necessary.

This is one of my all time favorite books. If you enjoy American History, the things you will never learn in a text book; this is it. A book I couldn't put down and was sad to see end. A rare find!
