One of the Mingus masterpieces rips through the history of jazz with verve and humor. Recorded at Columbia’s legendary 30th Street studios the listener is in the room. Buy it Git it in your soul
This is possibly one of the all time great jazz albums and a must for any jazz fan. It brings in tones of freeform blended with more traditional styles of jazz, truely pioneering. I rate this up there with Kind of Blue - Miles Davis, Freeform - Donald Byrd, Blue Train - John Coltrane etc I can not find fault with this composition it has it all
I purchased the album after watching a BBC programme on the emergence of Jazz in the year 1959, which highlighted the album as a highpoint. There are several outstanding tracks on it but a couple which disappointed. It is the first album by Charles Mingus that I've heard and I would recommend it from the standpoint of it's originality.
