The Herbie Hancock album Headhunters, from almost forty years ago was a game changer in the realm of Fusion. What began as yet another metamorphosis of the Miles Davis phenomenon flourished into the likes of Tony Williams Lifetime, Weather Report, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and among dozens of other efforts, the Hancock projects. Hancock and his band mates Bennie Maupin, Harvey Mason, and Paul Jackson wove a funky futuristic thread around some solid jazz blowing to create ground breaking music. Decades hence, the Return of the Headhunters does not unexpectedly hit you from out of left field like the original music did. It does, however, combine the growth of the artists from the point when the original album was produced and an advance in technology into pleasant reminders of what it was like back in the day when the natives really were restless.Read full review
