First of all, although I gave this album an excellent rating, I don't think all the songs are amazing, but most of them are. This is one of the best debut albums I've ever heard. Bjork is amazing! She is an incredibly creative song-crafter. Her music is very original, and she writes unique lyrics as well. - And her videos - wow.. I've seen a few and... wait, I should just stick to the review of this album, right? I must warn you that if you only hear this album once, several songs, especially the first track, are so catchy they will stick in your head forever. Some of the others are very sweet, gentle and laid back. Many songs on this album are romantic. I don't always care for some romantic songs, and that is why I don't like a few tracks on this album. I'm a straight guy, and just can't get into a song called "Venus as a boy." Also, a few just don't sound as good as the others. Oh yeah - note to other straight guys - Bjork is quite attractive and exotic looking - at least I think so. For those of you not familiar w/ Bjork, her name is pronounced "Byork." She is from Iceland, and in Iceland, as in some other European (would Iceland be considered European?) countries, the "J" has a "Y" sound. Bjork once sang for a band called the Sugar Cubes. I heard a few of their tunes and was not much impressed. Bjork went solo, and came out with "Debut" in 1993. Her music is in a class by herself - she's created her own genre. She uses a lot of electronic instruments and sounds, but also brings in orchestras and records real drums and other acoustic instruments to add to her sound. Her voice is high and very unusual and versatile. Sometimes she almost whispers, sometimes growls, yells, screams in ecstasy, etc. She also has an unusual accent. My favorite tracks are "Human Behaviour" and "Play Dead." Some of the others are very good too. I highly reccommend this album, as well as some of her others. I also own copies of "Post," and "Homogenic." She has several more albums besides those, but I haven't heard them yet. Each of the albums I have has its own sound, vibe and feel - if you buy "Debut" and like it, you'll want to buy some of her other albums, but don't expect them to be too similar. I hope you've found this review helpful, and if you a person who craves original and amazing music that is very far from the mainstream, then you'll probably love Bjork's music. Enjoy!Read full review
Brilliant album, Bjork is amazing and this first album is a brilliant starting point for Bjork newbies
Her first album following the break-up of the Sugarcubes, Debut is Icelandic trickster Björk's statement of purpose: bringing curious experimentation to the dance floor and putting her startling, expressive voice front and centre. Her perspective is a little alien--it's no accident that the first song talks about "getting close to a human"--but her leveling of genre distinctions has some wonderful results, especially the erotics easy-listening reggae sway of "Venus As a Boy". Paired with producer Nellee Hooper (of Soul II Soul), she comes up with a series of invitingly artificial settings for her pipes, built from late-night beats and peculiar timbres, and sings like she's overwhelmed with joy from all her senses.
This is a very good cd. The songs 'Human Behaviour' and Play Dead' are good enough to carry any album but the other songs are fun as well. It's an energetic and ecclectic pop mix with creative lyrics and an unusual feel. I used to own this album years ago and listening to it again now makes me slightly nostalgic. Music like this seems to have been replaced by a 'boom boom boom' style of electric dance music that I hate. A lot of the creativity in current dance music has been lost entirely; which is why I'm not a fan. Though this is a mainly electric composure, the inventiveness and creativity is stll there and I like that. Bjork has a brilliant voice and a wild imagination. I'd give it a thumbs up.
I love this album! Bjork is an unusual artist, I think you either love her or hate her. I find her vocals and use of instruments, rhythm and melodies entrancing, sometimes beautiful, quirky and often cute. My favorite tracks are the wonderful 'human behaviour' and 'Venus as a boy' - which both have fantastic videos. This album also signifies a distinct time in my life as a teenager, and i think the music beautifully mirrors many of my moods and experiences of that time. The album speaks to me of life to be explored and times full of promise.
