Michael Caine is fun in this movie. Much lighter in tone than the remake. Just wish the ending was different--i.e. that it had actually BEEN an ending. The cliffhanger leaves the cast (literally) and audience (figuratively) hanging. I understand they were hoping for a sequel, but it never happened, so there's no wrap-up to the story. Too bad. Definitely would have given it a higher rating otherwise.

Torin Italy~EX CON ~ Charlie Crocker (Michael Caine) takes over the plans for a bold robbery~ getting the GREEDY team~ included is a computer programmer who adores hefty women~ and 3 of the BEST drives in europe~ the heist is pulled off like clock work ~ when the *computer system* that controls traffic is highjacked by Charlie and his GANG and 3 minis (CARS) full of gold ~ make a clever escape over buildings, across a weir~ in a tunnel~ and through buildings. all under the eyes of the mofia~ who want to steal the gold from Charlie...~ included in the GANG are~ Benny Hill, Rossano Brazzi, and Rafe Vallone as the mafia head. the excellent chase scene makes up for the first 45 minutes of this movie which drags, the funny clever ending make this a must see for *heist movies fans*~ I GIVE THIS 5 OUT OF 5 FOR excellent script~ humor and one entertaining/fun chase scene~ LOOK out for the *self preservation society* LOLRead full review
Movie opens with Matt Monroe's 'On Days Like These' set against a sports car traveling through high snow covered mountains. Pleasantly haunting. Hotel worker; beautiful. Crafty robbery plan to jam the cities traffic leads to police/robber car chase involving tiny sports cars. Michael Caine is aloof, flighty and serious. Noel Coward is commanding. The movie takes you away to another place and time. Worth watching. Both movie and song are rare.
Michael Caine is just one of the stars in this movie that does such a wonderful job of storytelling... The movie starts with a positively orgasmic uplifting drive through the Alps in a Miura and goes on to pit the English underworld against the Italian mafia (who played themselves in the movie and had the "extra" roles in Turin's plaza)... The escape after the heist is a legendary car chase and the main reason people buy the movie but the non "car people" will enjoy it as well because of the fine character development throughout...
