This is an OK movie by itself, but just a dim shadow of the original. Where the original has a history of the lead's life from childhood through adulthood, with memory "gaps" in his childhood, that we only discover later are filled in by his actions as an adult, and holds a viewer's interest with its twists ahd turns, this movie covers only a year in the lead's life, and changes the concept such that there are no gaps to fill in, he simply re-lives prior experiences, and remembers how it happened before and changes events slightly to effect a different outcome. The first movie left off with great potential for a really good sequel, but this isn't it. Had I watched this movie before buying it, I would not have bought it. It's very disappointing with regard to the first. But, if you haven't seen the first one, maybe this one isn't so bad after all. The first movie can be viewed repeatedly, and be just as good every time, this one: once you've seen it, you've seen it and no need to revisit it.Read full review
As is often the case with motion pictures, the quality and imagination of the sequel Butterfly Effect 2 do not compare to the original Butterfly Effect movie. I became a Butterfly junkie after watching the original film several times. The twists and turns of the main character, who is able to jump backwards in time to try and prevent hardship and tragedy by changing pivotal events of his life along with those of his close pals, really captivated me. In the original Butterfly Effect, you see the hero and his buddies grow up from the time they are children, and while you want everything to turn out for the better, each "do-over" simply remanifests the inevitable tragedy, often leaving things in worse shape. In Butterfly Effect 2, we don't get to know the latest main character or his group of pals well enough to care as much about them. We see a smaller snipet of their lives. In addition, the ability of the hero to jump backwards in time is no longer a novelty in the sequel. However, without viewing the original, it may prove be difficult for the audience to fully understand what is going on with these "do-overs". There are still reasons to watch Butterfly Effect 2. It teaches lessons about what happens to our fallen hero when he embraces the rat-race of life, pursuing money and power before love and companionship. For a Butterfly junkie like me, it was worth watching, but I have to admit I was disappointed that Butterfly Effect 2 was not nearly as good as the original.Read full review
Nick Larson (Eric Lively) and his best friends Trevor Eastman (Dustin Milligan) and Amanda (Gina Holden) are celebrating the twentieth-fourth birthday of his girlfriend Julie Miller (Erica Durance) in a beautiful lake on a Sunday morning. Nick is expecting to be promoted in the company where he works, and Julie is planning to move to his place instead of going to New York for her Masters degree. However, Nick is called by his colleague Dave Bristol (David Lewis), who is disputing the promotion with Nick, for a meeting with a client. While driving back, Nick has an accident and Julie and his friends die. One year later, Nick finds that he can travel in time and tries to fix the past, with tragic consequences for the future. "Butterfly Effect 2" is a very unpleasant movie, with a terrible and flawed screenplay. The best things in this film are the accidents on the road, and the gorgeous Erica Durance, from "Smallville". The story really does not work and seeing this film is pure waste of time, and in the end it is better off watching the original "Butterfly Effect" again. As films go, the first film was quite well done even though it was a bit confusing at time. However, it always allowed you to resolve back to the main character which was Aston Kutcher. My initial responsiveness allowed me to come into this with an open mind and ask the director and the film to surprise me. After an hour of watching number 2, a started having less and less expectations. By the end of the film, I realized I had totally lost around 90 minutes of my life. A real blackout would have done me much better than watching this film. Why? 1) Forget the concept of blackouts, there are no blackouts here, the main character simply concentrates in a picture, everything shakes around him (a dumb visual effect) and he just travels in time back to points of important defining moments, or even still, just different alternative time-lines. That's it. 2) The screenplay is terrible and flawed. The plot is very flimsy, confusing and extremely boring. 3) The character development is zero and not even interesting. 4) Acting: Well, let's give them some credit, they did what they could. 5) The love history: A very common one. Does not add anything to the movie, it's not even romantic (like in the original where he always tries to save her). Before the end, Nick tries to break up with his girlfriend at the lake and this time she tells him that she's pregnant. 6) Whoever wrote the story does not appear to have seen the original or even studied it. It seems like he almost just looked at a review and shot the film the next day not putting any thought into the film's direction. 7) Inconsistencies throughout the film continually show us that all we are really seeing here are multiple possibilities of scenarios throughout the film. One such scenario shows another accident at the end where Nick dies alone and then their Julie must have had a baby alone. Another Flash-In just jumps him into a scene where his bosses daughter is teasing him into having sex at a dinner meeting? Wow, I think I could have thrown a film together a whole lot better than this and tied up the loose ends even, but somehow this was never accomplished. Finally, in spite of my comments you may still need to make your decision on you own. I'm going to give this film a 2/5 for totally wasting my intelligence. The Butterfly Effect 2 is probably not worth your hard earned money unless you are a huge fan of the original, and maybe not even then. I purchased this movie for one reason: it stars Erica Durance (who plays Lois Lane on the CW's Smallville), of whom I'm a big fan. She does an awesome job and shows her acting chops. Unfortunately she was the only bright spot in the movie. Co-star Eric Lively struggles in this movie despite a good scene or two. Unless you're a big fan of the original or Erica Durance, I would skip this one.
When got a chance to watch it, enjoyed seeing how things came out in this movie.
