As a new Lionel collector/opperator, This book was very disapointing, Nothing at all like the David Doyle Postwar era book I bought. As a price guide it is useless, most of the prices are way too low compaired to shopping at a local train show or hobby shop or even ebay. Just Try to find a modern Lionel box car for $5 on ebay....really? The steam engine section is very vague with very little photos and almost no info or descriptions. Only one small photo of an 8801 Blue Comet with no coments on its release or availability? The largest section in the book is for box cars. Nothing to explain the difference between trainsounds, railsounds, or LTI, MPC, to the new collector. There is also no info on complete factory boxed sets, acessories, etc. If it had been broken into 2 books of early mpc/modern era and each contained more info and photos it would have been a better buy.Read full review
A serious Lionel hobbyist needs a comprehensive historical guide to the Company's products. David Doyle's series of books is among the best on the market. The set includes guides for the years 1900-1942, 1945-1969, and this one. (Note that Lionel made no toys as such in 1943-44 because of WWII.) The best feature of these books is the profuse photos of locomotives, rolling stock, accessories, and other items alongside the descriptions and market values. The books make up a kind of pictorial history of Lionel trains. They're great for checking on the scarcity and estimated price of an item before bidding on eBay or shopping at a train show, as well as having fun browsing. Whether one obtains a copy from a local bookstore or at a discount online, this book and others like it make worthwhile purchases for a personal reference library.Read full review
This is an outstanding reference book covering 30 years of Lionel trains. The items are arranged for easy reference, and the accompanying numbers and color pictures make any particular Lionel item very easy to identify. The brief descriptions of Lionels ongoing changes are much appreciated and helps distinguish between similar items. The book is printed on high quality, glossy paper and appears to be bound securely for a long lifetime. An invaluable reference book for Lionel fans in my opinion.
This is a long needed publication for the newer Lionel Items. It is easy to find items listed, pictures are good, and book quality is good. There is nothing to complain about. Lots to praise about this book. Pictures of every item would have been nice, but most are there, and of good quality. I use my copy frequently.
Excellent book! Lionel Collectors should buy. The way it is laid out makes it easy to use. I can quickly find which ever car or train I want to look up fast. It is very informative and has great descriptions of the trains, cars and all the Accessories. It also has some good historical information about Lionel. The book is also a great value with the low price. This is must for the serious Lionel collector.
