I have read all of Meltzers books and have to say that I am shocked at just how bad Book Of Fate is. Meltzer has a lot of talent. Its apparent if you read his earlier books. Sadly it is greatly mis-spent here. The Book of Fate has so many holes it is difficult to point to them all. From Wes, the main characters disfiguring involvement in an assassination attempt on a future president to the "three", a group of law enforcement officers who pull off evil escapades far beyond belief. The whole story is a house of cards. One damnably idiotic silly plot strain stacked upon another and bringing it to a point in the end that is almost laughable. I wonder if Meltzer sketched out the story before starting on this book, or if he just had some idea and it built momentum as he wrote. Either way, its a disaster. I cant think of an author actually penning out the ideas for this book and saying "hmmmmm, this is a good idea." The worst thing is Meltzers use of the Da Vinci code phenomena. He plops in a few bits of cryptic gobley gook pertaining to Thomas Jefferson and the Masons, only it leads nowhere at all. I would not recommend this book to anyone. I was totally looking forwards to reading it, and ended with thoughts of disgust.Read full review
This book is a well written, fast paced, political thriller. It's political in the sense that it involves fictional political figures - the main character was a presidential aide and has continued in that position after the President left office. It is apolitical in the sense that it does not discuss party affiliations or actual political issues. It is one of the few pieces of fictional that I have read in this genre that has no graphic sexuality, although it does have a fair amount of violence. The book is also a jab at books like the Da Vinci Code. The cover implies that freemasonry is involved, and one character in the story swears that there is a gigantic secret plot by the Masons entagled in this mysters. That man is, literally, insane. The lead character is burdened by guilt and injury after a man that he placed in the presidential limo is killed in an assasination attempt. The mystery begins when the dead man is spotted several years later! How could a dead man return to life? Who else knows about it, and why are they out for blood? It won't take too long to read this book - it will keep you up at night - to find out!Read full review
I have read every one of Brad Meltzer's six novels. They are always excellent, and THE BOOK OF FATE is no exception. It is riveting. From the first page on it is a "I cannot put this book down" kind of book. The book opens with an assassination attempt on the President of the United States. The President survives the incident, but a top aide and the President's first errand boy, Wes, are shot. Next, the book shifts to eight years later. The hero, Wes, is on a chase to find out what is going on and what happened eight years ago. Meltzer takes the reader on quite a journey and the writing is superb. I could actually feel like I knew these characters, and what they were going through and how they felt. Filled with fast paced action, complex plots and subplots, wonderful character development, twists and turns, political intrigue, and intertwined with humor, Brad Meltzer has another hit! I am looking forward to his next novel. I just hated to put this one down even when I was finished!Read full review
I have read only a couple of Brad Meltzer books and I loved both instantly, the story, the plot the characters, beautifully laid out. I am yet to read more of Meltzer's books. Currently, I just finished THE BOOK OF FATE -- my third Metltzer book. It started nicely and I was very excited, anxious to leaf through the rest of the book. Then, I slowly got lost, loosing the trend of the plot, however I kept reading and it got exciting again. An again, later on in the story, I got lost. I almost put the book down and decided to donate it to my local library, but I kept reading. In a nut shell, it ended quite disappointingly. This is not to say that I won't try his other books, it's just that I don't recommend THE BOOK OF FATE. His THE FIRST COUNCIL and THE MILLIONAIRES are highly recommended, for they are excellent.Read full review
