On the plus side, BONE EATER is a horror film that you can watch with your kids. No sex, blood, or gore. The Bone Eater is revealed before the opening credits: a giant animated skeleton that dissolves its victims to dust by stabbing them with a bone sword or breathing its evil green misty breath on them. This could have worked as a campy horror flick; instead, they play it like a mystery. The local sheriff and the evil land developer (who is digging up the Indian burial ground) keep wondering why so many people are disappearing without a trace on the construction site and on archaeological digs in the hills. Lots of screen time is wasted on talky investigation and on suspecting the local Indian tribe, which is frustrating to the viewer who already knows the answer. Finally, an Indian girl tells the sheriff (Bruce Boxleitner) that it's the Bone Eater, but he dismisses it as a legend. Meanwhile, people who dig up bones continue to get dusted by the Bone Eater, who doesn't actually EAT anything. Granted, in real life the idea of a Bone Eater would be hard to swallow, but since it prances around in broad daylight, sooner or later the sheriff has to believe. Characters make typical horror-movie mistakes (don't dig up an Indian burial ground!) but ultimately this is not scary enough to succeed as a horror movie, or mysterious enough to be a police procedural.Read full review
The digital effects are pretty cheesy (think old-school Clash of the Titans), but I enjoyed the story line more than I thought I would. The big draw for me was that it stars one of my favorite actors, Bruce Boxleitner, but the second draw, surprisingly, was the soundtrack. It's reminiscent of spaghetti westerns, enjoyably so. The ending seemed a bit rushed, if appropriately heroic, with the evil creature meeting its well-deserved doom. I'm not a fan of the thriller/horror genre, so I appreciated the scaled down violence: victims meet their end in an ashy kind of burst rather than bloody gore, which explains the PG-13 rating.
