With this 1933 three-act play written in verse and prose, Lorca had produced a tragedy in the classical sense, a genre he considered the real root of theater. The play is set in traditional Andaluc a, although in the hands of Lorca it becomes a mythical and universal place like classical Greece. A girl is forced to marry a man she does not love, since she is in love with another young man, Leonardo. After the wedding a crescendo of images that foreshadow the fatal outcome unfolds. As in a classical tragedy, the characters are subjected to their destinies when they discover that the fulfillment of their desires only brings about their fate more quickly.
