For years I did my fret work and used an older tool of mine that I modified to get the job done. I should of ordered these in the first place because they are made specifically for guitar fret work and help simplify the fretting process. This is a ruggedly built tool that should last for years to come if taken care of properly that goes without saying about any tool. They are designed like bolt cutters so they make easy work of even stainless steel frets which are typically hard to cut. They have a tang that allows you to store in a closed position because they have a spring in the jaws that force the cutter open if the tang isn't applied. Very precision made .

These are reasonably well-designed cutters with a lotta biting power, but I wouldn't recommend them for stainless steel fretwire. The amount of force needed to cut it causes the handles to flex and the cutters are reluctant to bite through the stuff. They might work better if the handles were longer/more robust to afford more leverage, but they're not. They'll cut the stuff, but every time feels like it's gonna be the last time. For nickel/silver wire, I'm sure they'd work great, cut flush, and last a long time, so at the price they're great for that. But, stainless? No. Keep looking.

Just got these cutters today. Was excited to get cutters that would make quick and short work of my SS fret ends... Did a test cut on a Jescar FW58118-S super jumbo fret. Oh boy, it was tough going but it finally did cut through the fret. It also chewed up the cutter in doing so! Did some more test cuts. Better results. However, in my experience, you need to center your fret right in the middle of the cutter blade and apply both hands (due to the short scale and torque of the cutter arms) with even force to have a successful clean cut with no blade damage. Apparently with my first attempt i was off center and to one side which proved to be the weaker area of the blade. Great price, but unforgiving and not dummy proof in my case. Hence the 3 stars.

I have used these cutters a couple times on fret wire already. They work for what they are made for but I would not recommend them for stainless steel due to I have had to touch up the cutting head after cutting just soft fret wire. They dull very easy. Also the pair I received are not ground straight and are very awkward to use. Would have sent them back but can not afford the higher priced cutters.

Very nice tool. The compound leverage design of this tool sets it far above any of its competitors. Unbeatable at any price. The design, along with the quality of materials and its manufacture, is something that not even NASA could improve upon. (the only possible exception would be if these were fabricated out of 100% hand forged damascus titanium by himalayian munks, with the handles dressed in 100% pure, royal-hymen grips, which would serve only to improve the bragging rights. Eh wot?) Anyway... These nippers are simply outstanding in every way possible! This one is a no brainer guys! But be extra cautious and watch out for the razor sharp edges on the jaws. They've got some nasty sharp pinchers going on there!!! It goes with the terroritory.
