Kalat's book is the textbook for my Physiology Psychology course. I think the book contains all the items important to the course, as well as some interesting, more in-depth information. Its strong point is the amusing text, as well as the frequent proof that UFO's don't exsist. His concept checks make it real easy to decide whether you know the material well enough to pass the test or not. Its also great to see he is not particularly long winded on any one subject, although the book ends up being pretty long. The examples also help a lot. Overall a very good book.
IT IS A BOOK THAT I NEEDED FOR A CLASS AND IT IS A GREAT BOOK! This Blame Biology message is not new, nor is it limited to dermatology. We are always looking for something or someone to blame; allowing us to shift responsibility. An article from CNN described circadian rhythms and additional sleep requirements as the biological reasons for teenagers arriving late to school, nodding off during class and getting into more car accidents. Recently a National Public Radio show explained how unruly and disrespectful teen behavior should be blamed on biologic changes not just in their hormone levels, but in their rapidly developing brains. Similarly, the Boston Globe printed an article which discussed how anorexia is not primarily a psychological, but a biological disorder and how we should blame the appetite regulation mechanism in the brain, rather than parenting or altered self-perceptions. An article in Newsweek attempts to clarify how antisocial behavior should be blamed on brain development rather than on poor choices or deviant personalities. Unfriendly and detached? There's no reason to invoke personal responsibility; look no further than gray matter density in the brainRead full review
Biological Psychology has been one of my more useful and useABLE textbooks of college. However, it is but a thin hardcover. I buy all of my books at discounts, yet this book, which has much less information than several of my others, was at least double the cost of my next most expensive book. Ridiculous. However, it is a good resource and it is very usable.
I purchased this book for my physiological psychology course. I found that this book was my guide to getting a goood grade in the class. Aside from having a great teacher, I was able to use this book to help me because it was easy to read, had good visual aids, and was well-organized. I also recommend using the companion website as it offers other means for studying.
This book was required for college. Writer isn't bad on content nor is he overly liberal like the authors of some of my other college books.
