As with any production of this nature you can expect a lot of producer liberties. However, I did not find it to be a distraction or a detriment to the the scriptural account of Esther. The one liberty that stood out the most for me was the scenes where Esther and Mordecai pray to the Lord. In the scripture account as far as I know God is not even mentioned. Never-the-less, you cannot read Esther and not see God at work throughout the entire story! I feel the producer added the prayer scenes to make God's hand at work more obivious. I did not have a problem with this because I believe they did pray even though it was not recorded in the scripture account. Overall, I found the movie to be fairly scripturally accurate and well done with convincing characters and settings.
I watch a lot of Bible movies - it's my favorite genre - and I hesitate to buy any that I haven't previewed. This is my favorite movie of Esther. Far superior to "One Night With the King", and "The Book of Esther" (which is putrid). Louise Lomabard's Esther is beautiful, gentle, and unassuming, much as her Biblical character is portrayed. F. Murray Abraham's Mordecai is filled with passion and persistence, and his keening at the palace gate is spot on scriptural! Esther 4:1 "When Mordecai learned of all that had been done, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the city, wailing loudly and bitterly." This is one of The Bible Collection's finest productions, and it's regrettable that all their Bible movies don't meet this standard. Certain artistic liberties were taken with the script, but not one of them degrades or insults the Biblical account of Esther. King Xerxes (Ahasuerus) is a bit of an airhead at times, maybe more emotional than one would expect of a reigning king, but it isn't a bad performance. Some Christians are offended to think that a "good" Jewess would spend a night with the king to whom she wasn't married. I'm not among those critics. I see it as a do-or-die situation, and Esther did what she had to do to stay alive. Lucky for her people, the Jews, that she did! She was their salvation from the evil Haman. There's no record of her refusing to eat the king's food (as the prophet Daniel did), so she was a survivor. I don't just recommend this movie, I highly recommend it. I don't recommend all The Bible Collection movies, but this one should edify every Christian who views it. Hopefully, it will encourage all who aren't familiar with the book of Esther to read its ten short chapters. It's a real book of triumph! So is this movie.Read full review
This isn't the movie to watch if you're looking for a movie true to the Bible story, that would be the one with Murray Abraham or One Knight with the King. All three of these are my favorites. Nevertheless this movie is never silly, nor brash, it is cute, and often funny.

I really love this movie of the Bible account of Esther. It is pretty accurate except for a couple things. Esther was an amazing woman of faith and was greatly blessed because of it.
