As an avid reader during my childhood, I don't know how I missed the Betsy-Tacy books. I'm so glad that I discovered them as adult, in time to share them with my daughter. Written in the 1940s, about children in the first part of the century, the experiences shared in the books pass down through the generations in a timeless way. The stories are based on the childhood and young adulthood of the author, Maude Hart Lovelace. Betsy-Tacy is the first of the series and is about the start of a friendship between five-year-old Bestsy and her neighbor Tacy, a relationship that would last a lifetime. The little girls have a wonderful time going on picnics, selling colored sand, building a playhouse and starting school. What is truly wonderful is the "humaness" of the characters. They are not perfect little girls and neither are their lives ideal. They misbehave and suffer through sad times. But they try to be good and also learn to take life with all of its troubles and joys. A truly fabulous beginning to a set of warm and loving books.Read full review

Upon hearing many good reviews I chose to purchase this book. I'm reading it with my almost 5 year old daughter and it is a delight.
