The AFI's pick of these 5 Best Picture Oscar-winners are all dramas. I am going into depth with my 2 favorites & sending you to search through my reviews for more details about the other 3. "Mrs. Miniver" (1942) won 6 Oscars. Director Wm. Wyler was a winner, as was Greer Garson who played the leading lady, Mrs. Miniver. She & Walter Pigeon (Mr. Miniver) are a genteel British couple raising a family during the Nazi plundering of Europe during WWII. What makes this film so significant is that it depicts what a typical British family was enduring well before American audiences had a clue how much Europeans were suffering. Mrs. Miniver proves to be a tower of gracious strength who holds her family & town together in a very simple way. DVD Features include Full Frame 1.33; Audio: Mono in English & French. "Casablanca" (1943) remains 1 of the top 10 all time greatest films ever made. It won 3 Oscars for Best Picture, Director & Screenplay. Director Michael Curtiz was graced with an outrageously star-studded cast to die for: Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, Paul Henreid, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Conrad Veidt & S.K. Sakall, atop the long list. The setting is in "Rick's" nightclub, on the continent of Africa, the country of Morocco & the coastal, French-controlled city of Casablanca. As the Nazis close in upon the European countries, gaining more control of many regions, Europeans are fleeing by way of Casablanca, since they can get French visas to leave for the US through neutral Lisbon. Bogie owns "Rick's," where all the action takes place. Rains is the ever-present French Moroccan officer diplomatically straddling the fence between French & German allegiances. Bergman is Ilsa, the lover of Laszlo (Henreid), an anti-war resister who's being pursued by Nazis. Rick & Ilsa have a deep romantic history that pervades the story in a crucial way.
