This old girl is nice and heavy, one of the last mostly metal, super quiet, made-in-Switzerland models. It is unique among the old metal class in that it has 9mm, multidirectional stitching. I have shied away from 9mm stitching, as I would have to give up the beloved traditional CB hook to get it. But I really wanted directional stitching for sewing on finished items, like sleeves or pants, that could not be turned to sew all directions without cutting open the seams. That function works great and is worth the price of the machine alone. I paid about $800 in 2016 for the machine plus an extra large extension table, walking foot and several extra feet, a couple of design keys, books and other ref material, and more. The 9mm stitching has been a pleasant bonus. The rotary hook works just fine, and the 9mm stitches are fun...they allow nice fat embroidered borders and up to a 2 inch monogram without fussing with hoops or hooking up embroidery modules. For many people, this would be all the embroidery they need. It also has a stitch designer feature that will allow you to set up any favorite stitch that might be missing from the preprogrammed list, or to make up stitches just for the fun of it. The user screen is bigger than many modern machines, and the track ball is easy to use. And, of course, like all the old Bernina's, she very quietly stitches a beautiful seam and buttonholes so perfect you smile just looking at them. Read full review

While the machine I purchased was a Bernina Artista 185, which I love, I do own a 1630. I have used it for 20-some years, carrying it on trips a number of times a year. I have had some very minor repairs and I have it professionally cleaned once a year--nothing major. The 1630 has a small but easy-to-read screen, which is accessed by a trackball. The trackball takes a little getting used to, but, in my opinion, is easier to use than later models' methods. The machine cord rolls into the machine and the foot pedal cord rolls into the pedal. All in all, I would recommend this machine to anyone who sews, quilts, or does decorative stitching. Berninas in general are excellent and this one stands out. My daughter is NOT getting it!
This is my second Bernina sewing machine. I have a "vintage" 830 Record which I will never part with, but I am rather vintage myself. I bought this machine for the increased stitch (9mm) allowing me to sew monograms up to 2" wide without a separate "embroidery system" (most of which, I would never use). This machine comes "loaded" with features and contains within itself all the embroidery functions I would ever use. It will sew in 16 directions with both the straight and zig zag stitch without turning the fabric! The buttonhole capabilities and finish are like no other. Dependable and low maintenance with memory and design capabilities. What more could you ask for, really? This machine was purchased from a reputable seller and I am pleased with my purchase. The price point for the "used" machine was very affordable. The track ball is new for me, but so is a touch screen. Would I buy yet another Bernina? Silly question, I already have.Read full review
I bought mine brand new. at that time she was the top of the line. I still have her. She is my 3rd Bernina I bought. I kept trading in my machines. My 1st Bermina was the 830 Record (used), then I traded it in for the 1230 (used demo), and then I saved up my pennies to buy the new 1630. I also have the Artista 180E (new), and others. I guess you can say I am a Bernina Girl for over 30+ years and going strong. She was way ahead of the other machine companies with her computer technology. She was the 1st to be computer savvy. As you can see she has a mouse and very clean/crisp design and lines.

I have multiple machines, this machine is in a class of its own. Programming is a little old but machine is a absolutely miles in front of the rest. Power of a vintage machine and as smooth as silk. Simply makes sewing easier.
