Seamus Heaney makes Beowulf understandable to today's audience, and retains the sense of the original. Because Heaney is a poet himself, he has the instinct and respect for the original while bringing the language up to date. (I think it also helps that he is Irish, and he reads Beowulf himself with the lovely lilt)

This classic started out as Nordic Poetry to glorify a warrior. When the Nordic People occupied most of Great Briton this style of oral tradition was introduced. Monks transcribed the story and it came down to us. Seamus Heaney has made the best transliteration of the story poem of Beowulf. His oral rendition is well worth listening to.
Bought the CD for long road trip Added spice to the Allegheny Mountain Drive experience Best translation ever heard, Makes the Fable approachable Great sound And it got to the house in time in spite of my procrastination.
I love listening to poetry whilst lying on the beach. I have listened to this CD before and wanted it for myself. Thank you I know I shall enjoy it. Esther
My Husband and I are both really enjoying listening to this version, particularly great to listen to on long journeys.
