In many ways. Fidelio is not one of Beethoven's better works, but it is still fun. We get serious political intrigue, character misidentification and a love story. In other words like so many 19th century operas, the plot is little more than melodrama. But plot is perhaps the least important part of opera. While one needs a story to focus on, one wants to hear great singing and great music, and see great acting. And this performance delivers.
Great production. Great performance.
