I had heard about this movie for years but had been unable to find it until recently. I believe the original screenplay for this movie was written by the team of Stanley Shapiro and Paul Henning, two superb comedy writers of the era. The thing that intrigued me about this movie was that the script was later revised and made into the Michael Caine/Steve Martin hit, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," one of my all-time favorite movies. I don't want to "spill the beans" if you have not seen either of these movies yet, but the main difference between the two scripts was the characterization of Janet, "the Soap Queen." (I liked the "Scoundrels" version better.) Another little tidbit of interest to me was that, according to the VHS box comments, this was the first time that Marlon Brando had ever acted in a comedy. While I liked both "Bedtime Story" and "Dirt Rotten Scoundrels," Steve Martin's performance in "Scoundrels" is nothing short of brilliant. I am still glad that I got this video, though. For a serious fan of comedy films or budding screenwriter, "Bedtime Story" may be an interesting film to watch to see how a good story was made great in a subsequent remake.Read full review
