Thia is one of those rare cases where the blurb on the DVD case was spot on. It is indeed a most moving and sensitive film, beautifully directed and equally well acted by a cast of (to me) complete unknowns - apart, that is, from Nick Nolte. The story is a truly heroic portrayal of a poor Vietnamese youth, who has had to suffer the local scorn for having a American father who left his mother when he was a baby, and who is determined to find his father somewhere in the vast US of A. Whilst much of the film is truly harrowing, it is also uplifting, without any touch of sentimentality. Scenery is finely captured, whether in Vietnam or America. Apart from a rusty old hulk of a ship which inexplicably sports a crew of only one, I could not fault his exceptional film. No doubt it will stay with me for a long time to come. If you're into action flicks or special effects movies don't bother with this. If not, then DON'T MISS THIS ONE!Read full review
This film is is well made with strong performances by Damien Nguyen and Bail Ling. Although top credit is given to NickNolte ,Hollywoodnonsense because of his greater fame, he appears toward the end of the film and has little to do with it's power. It's solid story of the life journey of a mixedVietnamese/American man who is not really accepted in either culture but handles the racial abuse with stoic strength. Along the way the film paints a clear picture of what life is like for so many Asian refugees in America and abroad. It's a hard life with of people who are cheated, abused and used without any regard to them as human beings.
This is one of the best Nick Nolte movies as really shows his range as an actor. The rest of the cast do a excellent job and the story line is touching and engaging.
This was a very heart warming movie with a touching story beginning to end.I highly recommend this movie to everyone.
