FIRST LET ME SAY THE ONLY REASON I BOUGHT THIS SET WAS THE PRICE ($113.61 NEW INCLUDING S&H).If packaging is important to you bypass this set. Each seasons Disc's come in separate box's with accordion folded card board separators, each disc is in its own vinyl plastic envelope ( like the Bags in your store's vegetable department). They are extremely hard to remove and replace. Be prepared to remove them and place in your favorite case to store on a shelf. The Cylon figurine in my set was actually some kind of Transformer figurine doesn't even look like a Cylon. This is one thing that upset me the most. I used to think all the first Star Trek series were poorly designed packaging. Consumer beware as the saying goes. The set also does not have any episode list anywhere on the disc's or in the case. Now I do like my SCFI, TV shows included, even Old B grade films, does anybody remember Ray HarryHausen? Cinematography was OK for me a little grainy at times.Special effects are above every good.Story line was not quite true to the original. I believe in the original series the Cylons were made by a race of reptile type life form that though Man was better physically, so they made them in man's image to serve them.I watched this series for the first three seasons then off and on again through the first half of the fourth season.I have not even seen the last half of the fourth season. In the third season it became to overly in-crossed in religious and political overtones, and the only thing that kept me watching was the effects. Now if I had Paid more for this set I would be really upset.Heck the Star Trek Enterprise set that I believe was just starting to bloom in its fourth season sells for more than this set. Well I did get the set for $4.54 a disc, it would cost at least half that to rent them today and you don't own them.If you can get it for less than $100 and you have to have them go for it.Read full review
If you like GREAT sci-fi... heck - a GREAT show regardless if it is sci-fi / action / drama, or whatever... this is possibly some of the BEST writing / directing / screenplays you will ever come across! By far one of the best things to have ever graced the screen! This complete collection of all of the BSG episodes is a must-have for any collector or fan of any sci-fi or action show ever produced. This re-imagined Battlestar Galactica surpasses the limited budget of the 1978 original, bringing a much grittier and realistic approach to the story. The acting is wonderful, the graphics stupendous! The soundtrack is both literally and figuratively out of this world! If you haven’t seen / enjoyed this series yet, don’t miss out! Watch it from the beginning (with the mini-series) all the way through the end, and you’ll find yourself amazed with Ron Moore’s version of BSG. This set is really the way to go, and actually much more affordable than trying to pick up the individual seasons (which were released similar to real life... commonly in half-season releases, since a full season on BSG some times ran the course of nearly two years in real-time viewership). The set has everything you want (outtakes, behind the scenes, etc.), and to top if off, you even get a Diamond Exclusives version of the Cylon Centurion included with the set to top if off! If you love (or even just like) BSG, my thoughts to not having this set in your collection is simply, WTF?!? (...with the last F being ‘Frak’ for the non-initiated viewers... think ‘Felgercarb’ from the original show!)Read full review
This version of Battlestar Galactica is not only dramatically different from the original but it is superior to 99 percent of the sci-fi that you see anywhere on television or at the movies. Don't get me wrong... I still like the old show too but this version has made a quantum jump in sci-fi story telling and has raised the bar on its drama, maturity and seriousness of its story and brings forth issues that are parallel with today's current news events in its own emotionally charged way. This is not the family show that many remember watching on TV in the 70s. It deals with adult situations and has some graphic violence too and therefore I would not recommend it for anyone under 17 years of age. There's plenty of cutting edge CGI FX and it looks realistic through out. The characters have many personal flaws and there for have much depth. The over all story has many multiple episode story arcs, twists and turns, and mysteries to reveal that make you can't wait to watch the next episode. All the actors performances are top notch. Edward James Olmos is the perfect Commander Adama. The musical score is excellent. This is a very high quality show. There are a lot of extra special features too! There are two problems with this set. One is with the actual packaging of the DVDs themselves. It looks nice when you get the set until you open it and try to remove and return the DVDs into the flimsy plastic sleeves and then into the cheap accordion style sections. You'll see what I mean if you purchase this. The packaging engineer for this product would have done much better if it was done in the traditional DVD case box set manner. Also, there's a bonus: I think that some marketing genius at Universal decided to include a toy cylon but in an very deceptive act worthy of the evil cylons and probably for financial reasons decided to transform it into a cheap version of Megatron the Leader of the Decepticons of the Transformer franchise. It's not even a good Transformer as it is gray and can't change into anything else! Other then being both Sci-Fi baddys what were they thinking???!!! Transformers have nothing to do with BSG!!! I saw the same toy in the DVD box set at the store (You can see it incased in transparent plastic on top of the DVD set box) and I've read on line that others have received the same insult too! Anyways one should purchase this for the series on DVD and not the toy. By the way this comes with many extras, pod casts, etc but it does not include The Plan or Caprica. When I get a HD TV and a Blue Ray player I will purchase the Blue Ray version of the series and watch it again in all its glory as it was originally intended to be! I do highly recommend the series to any mature and serious Sci-Fi aficionados. Get it on Blue Ray if you have the equipment. Otherwise get the DVDs.Read full review
I like the show. I like the price - but there is a drawback to the packaging. The disks come in cheap plastic sleeves and are packed in cardstock boxes in the shape of a Cylon - one for each season, so they get crowded. Also there are no liner notes or episode/content listings. If you want decent cases for the disks and content listings, pay a little more and get the seasons individually.
I bought this set to see all the episodes I'd missed. Price was good. The Cylon action figure and telescoping DVD box is too cool! What I like about the New BSG series is its believability, great cinematography(genius in zooming on ships in space, run and gun camera effects, etc.), great acting cast and great plot to name a few. As an indepentdent producer here in Chicago, I appreciate so much in the production, directing and editing. As a U.S. Veteran the battle action and daily living, drills etc. of the Galactica, Pegasus and fleet shipboard life synchs with an 'Earthside' at-sea deployment. What I dislike about the remake of the series is that I didn't think of the idea! As a Sci-Fi fan I really don't compare it to any other movie or series. So I then say that it stands as a great series on its own. Bravo.Read full review
