Having only caught on to BSG during the last season, I decided to systmatically acquire the previous 3 seasons, especially knowing the end of the story, to see how it developed. Reading the episode guides, online, just wasn't satisfying enough. So after watching season one this weekend, I have found it well thought out, with both a fascinating storyline, and acompelling, engaging musical score. Acting was convincing enough to make me care about all main characters, and even the extras were professional and charming. The "reality" and mythology of the show is thoroughly believable. Having watched the first series as an older child, I wasn't distracted by differences, but rather saw the latter BSG a darkly humorous and grown-up version thereof. The distribution of episodes on the 5 disks were: disk one miniseries, disks 2-4 mainly episodes with a few extras, and disk 5 one episode and plenty of extras and bonus features. The season ends on both a satisfying and disturbing note, leaving the watcher yearning for a resolution. The whole "wait for next week" ending is now "wait till next season", and is strong enough to make me look forward to my next purchase, of season 2.0!Read full review
The Sci-Fi Channel made a mini-series original movie based on the classic TV series "Battlestar Galactica." After the success of the mini-series, Sci-Fi began producing a cable-network TV series that continued the storeline and sub-plots that began in the mini-series. While the writers did use the original series as a basis for characters, locations, plots, and developments, most of the new series is original, not to mention the technology of today allows for superior special effects and sound. It is well worth a viewing if you are at all a fan of the original TV series. If you are looking for a action-adventure type show, you will be disappointed at times; the new series focuses on the characters and how they deal with the issues that arise from the cataclysmic events that tore apart the perfect world they lived-in (which many of them begin to realize was not that perfect after all). The writers definitely included many contemporary issues on purpose for viewers to think about and relate to the characters. A very well written re-write.Read full review
I have only begun watching this series, but I must say that, aside from all of the smoking in it, it is far superior to the original one that I grew up on as a kid. As much as I loved it at the time, it simply does not stand up to this new series with its much harder, more troubled individuals struggling to exist in a world of constant danger and fear. It is something akin to Star Wars meets Philip K. Dick. I do, however, prefer the original Galactica model to the new one, though the retracting side skids is an interesting modification, one that makes sense. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Many have said it, and I'll say it again... This is the best show on Television, of any genre. Hands down. The opening scene where the human delegate shows up at the agreed upon meeting place, knowing that it has been 40 years since the end of the Cylon war and the Cylon's have never shown up, and when the door opens and the Cylon lumbers around the corner, the human's face drawn with shock... I knew, that this show was back and it was cool. What makes Battlestar Gallactica a cut above the rest, is the upgraded Cylons, the dynamite weightlessness feel the soundtrack gives you when the fighter pilots fire their canons into deep space and the drum beats that accompany them, the incredible storylines that accompany a desperate and depleated human race as they scramble for hiding places from the newly refreshed and technically superior Cylon army... but more than anything... it's the human dramas that put this show over the top. Ultimately, that is what Battlestar Gallactica is about. It's about the human issues, romance, power struggles, friendship, bravery, having a cigar, alcoholism, trusting each other, rebuilding a society and making decisions that keep you alive. That is what makes Battlstar Gallactica the homerun show that it is. It's reliance on human issues is the heart and soul of the show. What makes us better than a race of robots? Emotions. Personalities. Love. Our nature to cherish life. BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA is a smash. Edward James Olmos plays Cmdr. Adama who struggles between his human emotions and his military emotions. Mary McDonnell plays Laura Rosin, who is the next in line surviving politician and default President. Jamie Barber plays Cmdr. Adamas son Lee and top fighter pilot. The beautiful Katee Sackhoff plays the tomboy, tough as nails Lt. Kara Starbuck who puts herself out there, time after time, in order to prove herself. The show is rich from all angles and the best on T.V. in a time when many currently running shows can wrongfully say the same thing.Read full review
The Season 1 box set of Battlestar Galactica is a must have for the Sci-Fi fan. Growing up I watched the original or I believe it is called the "EPIC" series and really enjoyed it. This show is everything that the original series was and more. One bit of advice I would like to give to the potential buyer/watcher of these seasons. I suggest you either take the time to watch the TV miniseries for Battlestar Galactica (2004, I believe) or purchase it. If you just start watching Season 1, alot has already happened that foreshadows their present situation as Season 1 starts. This series (all the seasons) is really about paying attention to the details. Can you just start midway through a season and enjoy it? Most definitely!... will you understand everything that is going on and why? Nope. My wife sits beside me and asks me questions throughout each show. I try to catch her up on who this character is and why this is happening, who is human and who is not human, etc. and it's not easy. Start from the beginning and you'll know "what the Frak" is going on. I love all things Sci-Fi and this show really rocks! Excellent original writing and dialogue, plots and mini plots weaving around each other, and Starbuck is a girl in this one! How can it get any better?Read full review
