When Elliot Goldenthal took the musical reigns of the Batman franchise from Danny Elfman in 1995, very few were sure what to expect. His breakthrough score, Alien 3, had alternated between darkly lyrical and wildly chaotic, as had his Oscar Nominated Interview with the Vampire in 1994. Nothing had quite shown he had the musical chops to thematically match Elfman's wonderful Batman march, and no one was sure that he even had it in him. Thankfully, he came close, at least. To be sure, Elfman's theme is a masterpiece, and anything placed next to it will pale in comparison. So, Goldenthal took a different approach: on the dvd, he claims he pulled out his son's Batman toys and began playing with them, humming music to go with the action, then recording what he came up with. The results feel far more improvised, a lot more fun than Elfman's tightly wound score. This childlike enthusiasm, however, is also the score's one flaw: it tends to err towards excess. It sometimes goes a little *too* far over the top, gets a little *too* sprawling, feeling at times like a kid with a blank check in a candy shop. It wants to do everything, and it does. However, I would rather see someone take risks and occasionally over-reach, then see them play it totally safe and succeed. That breathless sense of wonder makes up for everything.Read full review
