Pretty good story, but author tries too hard for "snap, crackle, & pop" in her style: using just the attributive adjective without the expected noun (a "two-lane" [road], a "Zip-lok" [bag], etc.) and turns too many nouns and adjectives into verbs (to 'turtle,' for example); it becomes annoying. She also has a fetish for ending a chapter with some surprise, discovered but not revealed; thus you must turn the page. Well, I'd have done that anyway. But the 'end' of the chapter is really not quite the end. It's an obvious ploy, and it begins to annoy after about the twelfth time. If you're a pilot, you will wince at the errors in aviation terminology and operations. The Cessna 210 that has crashed might (the heroine speculates) have gone out of control because a small parachute became entangled with the rudder. Well, EVERY pilot learns that what turns an airplane is the BANK, which results from application of AILERONS. (Rudder should be used too, but it is not necessary to accomplish a change of heading.) There are errors in terms, too, for example the explanations of "VFR" and "IFR." In discussing radar, the author reveals that she has never heard of "flight following," used with VFR flights. And so on. But these problems affect only about two pages of the book. If you're not a pilot, you won't be bothered. But Ms. Reichs should take flying lessons if she expects in the future to introduce aviation into her plot. There were some unnecessary oversights in grammar and spelling, but not as many as this writer has come to expect in the popular press. Overall, the book was satisfying, if somewhat excessively complicated in its plot.Read full review
I'm reading my way through the whole Kathy Reichs Temperance Brennan series because they are well written, interesting, and a great way to enjoy a predictable mystery.

I bought "Bare" Bones and nine other Kathy Reishs novels because I enjoy her style of writing and her subject matter is always intregeing. She is very discriptive and writes at a professional level that most can understand. The only negative comment about her books is that sometimes she goes on longer than she needs to get the point across. I have also enjoyed how she has evolved since "Death DuJour", her first novel, to the much better writer that she is today. For those who love to read, I highly recommend Kathy Reichs and her forensic escapades as an escape and bedside companion that is difficult to put down.
This book was a good read. The bone Dr. was way out of sight.
