This is a small scale train set. Check out N Scale with your favorite search engine before you buy this set. It takes up a small amount of space, but that also depends on you. If you like a 24" circle that the train runs around all day long than you won't mind just what you get in the box. If you like a little variety it doesn't take too much track to make a big difference. No one will tell you, but this train comes with 12 pieces of track that is all 11 1/4" (11.25") curved track. Now you should do your homework. If you want a more interesting layout (design of track, not just a circle) you should get one of the Model Railroad layout software packages. They are typically free to try with limited sizes of layouts. Try building different tracks and then buy your track accordingly. Remember the 11 1/4" curved track is the original you have. If you decide to go forward you will now need two things. First, upgrade the couplers that are on the locomotive and cars that you just got. Second, buy a good book on track layout designs. A lot of people recommend Track Planning for Realistic Operation: Prototype Railroad Concepts.... by John Armstrong, you can find it right here on ebay. OK, so you decided you bought a cheap train set. Well, frankly speaking there's nothing wrong with that. Whether you're using it with your child, or just getting into the hobby there's no better place to start. Keep it simple, keep it inexpensive, and give yourself some time to decide what you really want. If you decide it's not for you you didn't go overboard. Personally, I like this particular set because I'm a Santa Fe fan with locomotives with this paint scheme. So, if this train doesn't fit your idea of cool, there are always other styles and types of locomotives to pull your ideal train. I didn't rate this a 5 because it only has a 24" circle track, and you will really want more, soon.Read full review

This is a great basic entry level set. I added a track pack to make a more complex track layout. The controller does not have a power connection for accessories so using it to control switches (turnouts) isn’t possible but that would be my only complaint.

I had this same set in 1969, and this modern one is pretty good. The detail on train engine and cars is great. The transformer works very well, and has a good design. My only two complaints are: 1) The couplers don't latch very well, and it may be due to the curved (circle) track layout supplied, and I don't have any straight track. 2) I wish the headlight would illuminate at full intensity the instant power is supplied to the track, but it only gets brighter when more throttle is applied.

There was enough track to make a 2' circle. It is fairly easy to get the cars on the track through the railer section. The power connection to the track will easily come out if you don;t secure it. Coupling the cars are a little difficult but manageable. I am happy with the train set.
