Bush on the Couch is a serious, very professional analysis of the working style and personality of Pres. George Bush. Frank is a psychoanalyst who has never seen the Pres. professionally, but makes his analysis from watching him on TV, studying his childhood formative experiences, and looking at his decision making style (all of which is public record). He builds heavily on developmental theory, and cites leading experts to buttress his case. Frank sees Bush currently using religion in exactly the same way that he earlier used alcohol--as a security reinforcer and avoider of conflictual decision making. His bravado, swagger and public smirk hides an insecure personality that relies on power and manipulation to achieve goals. His family childhood experiences taught him to never look back, once you make a decision you move on. You must continually reinforce and promote your decision as the right one, because changing your mind is a sign of weakness--and that was constantly berated in his youth. This book will appear to some persons to be highly partisan. Those who support the Pres. will cry foul time and time again because the evidence presented does not project a confident, qualified leader. (and this section of the population would reflect Bush's own disdain for psychiatry and pscho-babble. As one who has doctorate and has done post-doctoral studies, this book reads very well, and persuades me that Frank relies on quality sources to develop his argument. I learned a great deal about childhood influences, and developmental experiences in shaping an adult life. As I read the book, I kept saying "So that explains it.." as I also remembered actions taken by Pres.Bush. As I watch the evening news or CNN, I can better understand what is happening inside Bush (often without him being consciously aware) as his mannerisms, and his speaking style reveals much about how he functions. I personally am one who feels Bush has led us into a disastrous war, he is incapable of acknowledging mistakes with any specificity,he uses the presidency to bolster his own very weak self-confidence (altho he covers this weakness in the typical manner by overcompensating). I found this book to be extremely helpful in understanding how the man operates and actually helps me be a bit more sensitive and less critical as I try to survive under the Bush Administration. The book will be polarizing for some people--if you love Bush, you will hate Frank, and if you detest Bush you will absolutely love it and want the whole world to read it. I bought the book because I saw it in my son-in-laws office(he is a Therapist) and thought it looked interesting. Frank's credentials are strong, his process of collecting information is secondary (by necessity--he states he has never met with Bush professionally), and his writing style to clear and very readable. He states that he is not a Bush advocate, but I did not sense any mandate to demean or destroy. The book is not filled with technical psychiatric language but translates observations into very understandable lay language. If you want to understand this administration and its leadership, BUSH ON THE COUCH is must reading.Read full review
I purchased this book because of my intense dislike of this useless, worthless bag of puss. I guess I just wanted to confirm that my feelings had justification.
THIS BOOK REALLY OPENS YOUR EYES ABOUT BUSH. IT WAS SO INTERESTING, I COULD NOT PUT THE BOOK DOWN!!
